Re: Grace Layfield
25/1/24
Subjective:
Grace was seen for her first appointment following owner enquiry. Grace has been lying down more
frequently, and has been reluctant to go forward. She has previously had her tarsal joint/s
medicated and has past history of stomach ulcers. Owner would like to have Grace seen for physio
to aid comfort levels Grace has recently been transitioning (2 months) to barefoot from being shod.
Objective:
Conformation/static – Grace shows hyper extension bilaterally of her metatarsophalangeal joints.
She is also “straight” through her tarsal joint with limited angulation.
In walk, Grace laterally circumducts her right forelimb during flight phase. Theres is a reduced flight
arc in all four limbs and Grace undertracks with both hindlimbs approximately 1 hoof length. Overall
there is a lack of impulsion in trot. Turning is lacking range of motion in the neck and back on the
turns, foot placement, height and timing could be improved slightly.
Assessment Points:
Limited pelvic flexion and extension
Vvisible spasming and muscle contractions along the longissimus group
Reactive in serratus thoracis (girth area) and base of the neck at brachiocephalic insertion.
Thoracic sling restrictive of forelimbs in protraction/abduction
Exercises:
Alter feeding positions to encourage natural foraging and engagement of multifidus group
Heat packs to alleviate muscle tension
Stretching to aid flexibility of neck and back
