Monty– Exercise Prescription
20/09/23
Monty was seen to give a routine check up on his back and neck as he can
be difficult to bend and can become stiff in his hindlimbs. Monty is 29
and is ridden 3-4x a week including jumping, he is overall a fit and
healthy pony. Good foot balance and mid shoeing cycle.
Gait assessment – Monty had a slightly toe-in landing pattern on his
right forelimb in walk, was base narrow behind and showed some stiffness
in his pelvis. There was reduced pelvic movement in the walk and minimal
fetlock drop in both hind-limbs indicating stiffness and reduced
weight-bearing here with an overload onto the front limbs. Monty tracked
up in walk. There was less flexion of the right hindlimb and this leg
was his weaker limb showing mild circumduction. Good back up and
circling both ways – mild reduction in neck and spinal movement.
Palpation –Pain response on left side TMJ joint, responsive to masseter,
mid way down facial crest on the right and down facial nerve. Tongue
against ramus of mandible right side. Serratus ventralis showing tension
drawing shoulders towards to the body. Brachiocephalicus muscle in neck
showing increased tension and development (overuse of forehand).
