Opal– Exercise Prescription

Opal had been purchased in a poor body score and had been turned out to improve this.
After 12 weeks on grass there is still a discrepancy between the way Opal has improved her
muscle mass. Her shoulders are well developed yet from her mid thoracic region caudally
show little improvement in muscle bulk and tone.
Gait assessment – Right fore lateral landing on foot, in walk on two track albeit narrow with
the hindlimbs. The hindlimbs reach stance and then internally rotate into full retraction of
the limbs. Trot is stilted but limb movement is straighter.
Palpation – Shoulders are showing increased tone and use oppose to hindlimb movement.
Increased reactivity through girth area and some lesions seen where harness was rubbing.
Taught bands through middle gluteal and superficial gluteal. Lack of middle gluteal mass due
to reduced hindlimb mobility. Spinal range of motion reduced and back is weak. Limited hip
mobility and lower back.

Use of a feed such as veteran vitality (1 scoop a day
plus water to soak) will improve condition as it is a balanced feed, it contains fibre and also
will provide joint support while we build muscle mass. Extra calories may be added in such
as chop or oils. Usually used to keep weight on older horses it will have extra calories in this
feed.
