Ellie- Exercise Prescription
19/06/23
Ellie was seen for physiotherapy on 19/6/23 to aid with obtaining correct bend when ridden.
Recently had teeth and saddle checked, wears pads in shoes and feet look balanced. Goals are to be
enjoyed with hacking, schooling and pleasure work. Recently weighed and is good, may need
additional fibre. Saddle non-comfortable for rider, may be causing some issues.
Gait assessment –Ellie travelled mainly on two tracks, the right forelimb was slightly toe-out and
landed more laterally than left forelimb. Good 4 beat walk and 2 beat trot, overtracks well in paces.
Slight reduced flexion in hindlimbs on trot/walk assessment (hock and stifle) Track up may be due to
stilted movement in forelimbs as shoulders/chest and neck base were visibly holding tension and
under more load. Slight hip drop on the right side.
Circles showed good hindlimb proprioception, placement, and foot height. Timing was a little rushed
in places. Forelimbs sometimes less willing, foot height and timing reduced. Neck and back showed
bracing.
Palpation – Very reactive around TMJ bilaterally, released alot along facial crest, poll and TMJ joint.
Supra-orbital fat pad displaces more right side. Cervical spine releases full length right and left sides.
Serratus ventralis showing tension drawing shoulders towards to the body on the right. Spinal range
of motion reduced in dorsi-flexion. Increased tension in thoracolumbar fascia. Hypotonic epaxials
(more right side weakness) and gluteals, hamstrings hypotrophic. Main aim to improve global
musculature from thorax caudally by releasing shoulders for movement and bend.

Exercises (3x a week – the rest of time can be for hacking etc
)
Stretches (3x a week)
Alter haynet heights
Warm up routine at the start of a ride (3 laps both ways)
Neck mobilisation (before riding)
Flexions while ridden (eyelash inside, eyelash outside and then straighten up before the
corner)
Stretches (3x a week)
Control mazes
Neck mobilisations before ridden
Straightness pole exercise – can use a pair of poles or 3 as in the picture, aim to keep on
those train tracks and ride straight forward
Control mazes exercise
Warm up exercise
Goal
Stretches (3x week)
Control mazes 2 exercise
Neck mobilisations before ridden
Eyelash in/out exercise as warm up
Straightness poles
Standard trotting poles ¾ heel to toe steps apart. Use transitions as in warm up exercise
then go over poles, keep straight !
Neck mobilisations
Lots of figure 8 and serpentines to test shoulders
Control mazes 2
Stretches (3x wek)
Control over the bend exercise
Control over the bend exercise
Neck mobilisations
Weave poles – start wide and reduce in gradually !
Maze 2 uses lanes and channels to start using poles for lift
and elevation this will build muscle
Check straightness and improvement in symmetry in
musculature both sides, this is done by riding straight. Use
figure 8s and serpentines to keep testing this more.
Build muscle

Get used to routine and exercises
Neck flexion and slow steady release of muscle
Practice the maze to build confidence and release the
shoulders
Hopefully seat saver will help you find balance here for the
harder ridden work
Last test for shoulders to be free before strength work
Even up the muscle left to right,
Test the bend and control
Test the besd and control
Big test for shoulder movement – feeds into lateral work
