Physiotherapist report – Rose Gee
04/05/23
Rose was seen on the 4th May 2023 for an altered gait pattern in her hind-limbs.
Subjective: Owner reports Rose looked increasingly stiff and phoned her Veterinarian over the
recent bank holiday and has been prescribed phenylbutazone. Rose had recently walked in hand
with another horse and had improved her locomotion but after being ridden the next day seemed to
be stiff and sore. Saddle checks up to date. Farrier is due. Forelimbs have good heel, hindlimbs are
worn on lateral aspect and have medial flare with squared toes. Discussed weight.
Gait: Rose showed a bilaterally shortened forelimb stride with relatively straight and sagittal
movement pattern. Her hind-limbs showed bilateral circumduction with a lateral landing pattern –
which was also wearing the feet accordingly. Reduced active range of motion in the right stifle and
tarsal region.
Objective: Base of brachiocephalicus hypertonic and reactive, lumbar epaxial musculature reactive
and spasming bilaterally, right TFL and lateral thigh musculature restricted. Left hindlimb medial
muscles including gracilis were hypertonic and restrictive. Right tarsal tendon sheath distended.
Range of motion: Slightly reduced spinal mobilitywhen dorsiflexing, pelvic tilt good, right
stifle/tarsus restricted. Range of motion resented in hind-limbs.
Action:
Massage, Trigger point therapy, mobilisations
Reduce weight – additional pressure on hindlimbs
Continue to walk – better ROM after proprioceptive work, backing up and encouraging
medial placement of hindlimbs
Feed from ground – maintain flexibility in back
Farrier to watch movement and address any balance issues, add more support in hindlimbs?
