Physiotherapist report – Tilly Dixon
Jan 2023
Subjective: Tilly was seen 8/2/23 following a slip in the field
resulting in stiffness and reluctant to fully weight-bare on the left
hind. Tilly is described as “quirky” and generally is in good health
with good muscle covering and tone. Conformationally she has a sloping
pelvis and long back.
Gait: In walk there was asymmetry in the pelvic drop and reluctance on
the left-hind to protract the limb forwards. The right hind-limb
laterally circumducts in flight and lands laterally. Some hyperextension
of both hind-limbs fetlocks and shortened stride length with both
hind-limbs. In trot travelled on 3 tracks with quarters to the left.
Moved straighter and more fluidly in shoulders post-physio.
Objective: Today there was the majority of tension and tightness around
Tilly shoulders, this restricts her ability to move forwards with her
front legs and fully propel her trunk. The underside of the shoulders is
stuck to the ribcage and this also was seen the affect her pectorals
causing trigger points and spasming. Shoulder glide was tolerated. Light
covering of muscle over the back and tender around thoraco-lumbar
junction with some mild heat and resentment on palpation. This continues
into the hind quarters where Tilly becomes guarding and nervous of
manipulations. Mild trigger points and spasming was noted over the
lumbar region and into the gluteals but was not a key finding today as
there was residual muscle guarding.
Applied K-tape to left hamstring group and over lumbar region to
facilitate continued massage. Manual massage, myofascial release and
compressions were used gently to promote tissue elasticity and release
some tension that has built up.
Range of Motion: Aimed to improve shoulder range of movement over the
next few weeks.
