Troy – Exercise Prescription
28/11/22
Troy was seen for his initial session and has had a change in behaviour
over the last few months. In terms of movement, Troy moves straight and
lands evenly in front, his hindlimbs track up with the right hind being
fractionally shorter in stride length.
On assessment there were restrictions in each limb being protracted and
retracted and discomfort with spinal and hip movement.
The restrictions were due to scar tissue ehind the left forelimb and
sensitivity around the girth area, restricted fascia, muscle and skin
were present alongside some coat changes on the dorsal aspect on the
withers.
Following TENS and manual therapy the right hind showed deeper tension
and spasming in the dorsal serratus muscle around the point of hip.
Moving forwards, Troy will need to do certain exercises to keep his
pelvis and back looser.
[How to Improve Your Horse's Lazy Backup]
Other :
- Discussed that Troy must have hay or a handful of feed prior to riding
to eliminate the possibility of ulcers which are causing the back pain
- Try to do the back up each day, just a few steps when Troy comes out
the stable, this will quickly add up to lots of STEPS !
- Monitor any changes in behaviour and reassess at a later date
following a break at Christmas.
- Take care girthing up and ensure the saddle cloth is not creased or
laying flat – pull up into saddle gullet.
