Miley– Notes & Exercise

Miley has been displaying symptoms of a forelimb lameness for a few weeks during a riding lesson.
She has then recovered and the lameness has recurred following a new horse joining the herd.
Owner reports effusion and heat on the right forelimb caudal mid cannon. Historically Miley has
been an active horse and is now ridden 3x a week.
Posture – Well balanced head and neck, higher tuber sacrale and cranially loading onto the
forelimbs. Straight forelimbs with upright hoof capsule, shod well. Mild effusion around
metacarpophalangeal joints bilaterally. BSC 6/9. Mildly lordotic thoracic spine and flexed pelvis.
Gait assessment – Undertrack in walk by 1 hoof length, undertracks in trot by 1.5. Straight moving
forelimbs with bilaterally reduced stride length. Straight head and neck in walk and trot, mild head
nod in trot indicative of a right forelimb lameness 1/10. Toe out bilaterally with hindlimbs and left
hindlimb lameness. Increased metatarsophalangeal drop bilaterally in hindlimbs. Reduced tarsal
flexion left hindlimb. Circling right showed good foot height, placement and rhythm, lacking neck
laterality. Likewise to the left, reduced.
Palpation - Reduced bilateral neck mobility C2-4 with reduced flexion right 20% and left 50%.. Left
forelimb shows carpal crepitus and reduced flexion, good hoof mobility bilaterally on rotation.
Resisted forelimb protraction. Thoracic lift restricted bracing into rib heads. Bilateral lumbar
spasming mild.
