Penny – Physiotherapy Report and Exercises
19/1/26
Penny was seen for her initial consult on the 24/9/24. Difficulty with right bend and heavier on
this side when ridden. Saddle checked and owner reports reluctant to move forwards. Last seen
2024. Recent splint RF.
Posture: Penny has lost some muscle tone since I last saw her especially over her right shoulder. She
has straight hindlimb conformation and posture which does increase suspensory strain in the
hindlimbs, shod on the hindlimbs which is good for heel support here. Back is straight and forelimbs
placed well under the body.
Gait: External rotation of right hind, left-hind straight flight pattern. Landing is good both hindlimbs,
a little narrow moving behind overall. Straight forelimbs. Undertracking 1 hoof length with the right
hindlimb. Tail held significantly left.
Turning right looks stilted in the neck and back. Left turn was good. Good rhythm, foot flight and
placement left turn, right turn reduced foot flight and rhythm.
Palpation: Restricted mid cervical spine right hand side, not released today as lower back was larger
concern. In the left lumbar region, slightly spasming and restricted, right side was moderately
spasming and trigger points location in lumbar region extending into right gluteal and caudal 3 ribs.
Reduced gluteal mass indicating reduced or limited hip extension. Stronger left shoulder and bracing
right hand side of the body. Lacking quadriceps and stifle supporting musculature.
Overall: Penny has work to do to increase muscle mass, this cannot be achieved through altering her
forelimb/neck position as she is braced here to compensate for the hindlimb biomechanics. Her back
pain and restricted hindlimbs make propulsion difficult resulting in “running” forwards on to the
shoulder. Progress can be made. She is a lovely girl and will do well with 3 monthly checks.
Aims:
•
•
•
•
Soften and supple the neck through stretches
Release the back #
Strengthen the quadriceps
Improve hindlimb retraction
