Shaun - Initial Physiotherapy
Assessment and Exercises
24-9-25
Shaun is an active and athletic horse who enjoys all round activities. He is lacking some impulsion
and owner reports difficulties bending and occasionally picking up canter leads.
Gait: Straight moving, narrow with the hindlimbs Same movement pattern seen in trot, no head nod
seen or issues with foot balance (boots were on as recently lost a shoe). Turning shows right circle
was difficult. Lack of crossing over with the hindlimb and more stilted through the head and neck.
Palpation: Tendancy to elevate head and strain the lower neck muscles both sides, this has the
effect of bracing the neck and making turning difficult. Tension also seen around the poll area at the
root of this muscles. Care to be taken not to apply too much pressure here through leverage bits or
draw reins/gadgets. Left trapezius is reactive and restricting shoulder mobility. Left side of the back
is braced and spasming/reactive, this is extensive and is carried from the hip to the shoulder. Lack of
hindlimb protractive ability, able to retract fairly well.
Aim:
Improve impulsion
Improve hindlimb flexibility
Reduce neck compensation
