Dixie – Physiotherapy – Follow up
Dixie was presented following a diagnosis for suspensory branch disease in her hindlimbs.
She has recently had steroid injections to her metatarsophalangeal joints and remedial
shoes put on to increase the surface area for her hindlimbs. Her weight is good and she
has access to a small turnout field.
Gait assessment: In walk, improved from last visit whereby now her hindlimbs are more
evenly taking the weight. The right hind is slightly delayed in protraction (forwards). Pelvis is
more even with a mild lameness still present in the right hindlimb. Both hindlimbs are
slightly externally rotated. Good foot height and no scuffing seen. Forelimbs moved straight
and balanced with wider movement observed today Head and neck braced and tense.
Overtracks with hindlimbs but limited pelvic mobility and stifle/tarsal flexion. Turning
showed neck stiffness and reluctance to torque the right hindlimb.
On palpation: there was mild spasming and trigger points more so on the left side of the
epaxials. Left hamstring was hypertonic with a small muscle strain mid-belly in
semimenbranosus, range of movement has improved. The right hamstring was more
reactive and restricted, Dixie was resentful of this beling palpated and although it did not
feel to hold as much tension, this is considered. Range of motion of the neck was limited
bilaterally C3-5. Mild crepitus in both hindlimb fetlocks and restricted protraction and
retraction of the hindlimbs. Hindlimb musculature has improved since previous visit.
