Eddie - Initial Physiotherapy
Assessment and Exercises
Eddie is a lovely natured gelding who is used for hacking and some schooling. Owner reports some
tripping behaviour and can be difficult to engage. Had previously poor fitting tack and was sent
away for a couple of weeks, has good condition and weight. Good balanced feet and shod all 4.
Gait: Straight moving with even pelvic drop either side, marginally more cranial pelvic movement on
the left side and ribcage to the right. Moved in the sagittal plance with all four limbs and good
rhythm. Trotting showed the same, eager to trot and good foot balance and mobility.Turning was
good on terms of foot flight and timing, a little reluctant with hindlimbs.
Palpation: Head and jaw feel normal. Neck is braced in brachiocephalicus and sternocephalicus
muscles. Restricted latissimus dorsi bilaterally which is limiting forelimb protraction. Moderate
trigger points and spasming in the lumbar region of the back. Pelvic extension resented, pelvic tuck
is good, shows good mobility through the back. Lacking muscle mass in hindlimbs over quadriceps,
TFL and biceps femoris. Stifle and hocks feel ok, no swelling heat etc.
Aim:
Improve strength
Reduce neck tension
Improve back mobility
