Dixie – Physiotherapy Plan 19/2/25
Dixie was presented following a diagnosis for suspensory branch disease in her hindlimbs. She has
recently had steroid injections to her metatarsophalangeal joints and remedial shoes put on to
increase the surface area for her hindlimbs. Her weight is good and she has access to a small
turnout pen, with current weather conditions this is quite boggy and may increase strain on her
suspensories until it dries or wood chip is added.
Gait assessment: In walk, left hip drop and right hip hike observed. Moves close with the
hindlimbs and has more weight placed onto the left hindlimb.Left hindlimb turned out and right
hindlimb straight. Good foot height and no scuffing seen. Forelimbs moved straight and
balancedslight lateral landing pattern on both and also close moving. Head and neck help braced
and tense. Overtracks with hindlimbs but limited pelvic mobility and stifle/tarsal flexion. Turning
showed neck stiffness and reluctance to torque the right hindlimb.
On palpation there was mild spasming and trigger points more so on the right side of the epaxials.
Left hamstring was hypertonic and gracilis was restricted and adducting the limb. The right
hamstring was more reactive and restricted. Range of motion of the neck was limited bilaterally
C3-5. Mild crepitus in both hindlimb fetlocks and restricted protraction and retraction of the
hindlimbs. Lacking in hindlimb musculature and gluteal.
Plan: Walk 20 minutes in hand using transitions and lateral steps to engage different muscle
groups. Each week work on specific exercises to target problem areas.
