Patient Name: Ruby Date: 5/2/25
Ruby was seen as a preventative case before exploring surgical
intervention for bilateral luxating patella. Ruby currently enjoys her walks and is on
restricted walking of 15-20 minutes a day. Discussed dog walker as important for
socialisation and well-being but to take care with any uncontrolled exercise or prolonged
exercise which may put Ruby at risk of further injury or damage to the unstable joints.
Rubys weight is good and her eating, drinking etc is normal.
Subjective
During routine walking, no scuffing, dragging or issues immediately seen
In sit, Ruby holds the left hind-limb laterally on occasion 2/10 repetitions
Can be stiff when rising in the morning
Objective: Gait assessment shows Ruby moves straight and has a good rhythm when
walking. Her hindlimbs are restricted in their range of movement and her stride length is
decreased in both hindlimbs. Turning on a circle shows patella instability and more so on the
right hindlimb.
Physical Examination Findings:
o Left hind-limb Sartorius and quadriceps tenderness and slight contraction.
o Right hind-limb has increased muscle mass and tone
o Left hind-limb shows hesitation to bear weight in comparison to the right;
Ruby appears to favour the right limb during movement as shown by foot
flattening
o Bilateral latissimus dorsi reactivity due to compensation
o Mild kyphosis of the lumbar spine
Range of Motion (ROM):
o Forelimbs: No issues, mildly resented forelimb protraction
o Hindlimbs: No issues palpated except movement of right patella in extension
and audible clicking. Left patella markedly moves when the limb is in
retraction or extension.
