Stormi – Physiotherapy Initial Consult
18/1/25
Stormi was seen for an initial consult for a check. She has some behaviour that is potentially
pain related and can be wary of people entering her space. She is a young horse and likely to
mature over time and hopefully we can work to resolve some of these issues. Owner wishes
to do all round work with her. Shoes required to be looked at and overall foot balance.
Possible saddle check required too.Find inclines difficult (walked up the hill on hindlimb toes
before treatment).Slightly croup high.
Gait assessment – Walk: Head held right, right side hip dropincreased barrel movement on
the right side (more ribcage is seen from behind on the right). Left hindlimb is toe out and
occasionally moves on the outside track. Spine shows slight curve with quarters left.Tracks
up. Reduced fetlock drop and spring on the forelimbs.Marrow moving in the hindlimbs.
Trot:Trotting was forward and rushed, reduced forelimb stride length and fluidity.
Turn: Turning showed good hindlimb proprioception, placement, and foot height. Timing
was good. Good ability to place, foot height was good and rhythm was good. Neck mobility
redued both ways.
Palpation – Poll tension and neck has reduced mobility C3-4. The left shoulder has reduced
muscle mass compared to the right and is restricted in protraction. The right mid thoracic
section of the back had hypotonicity and hypotrophy which correlated with where the
flocking in the saddle was redueced.Larger muscle mass on body and reduced limb muscles
on the forelimbs, showing we need to create bigger and more fluid steps with the forelimbs
and shoulders to reduced the concussive action.Pelvic rounding and extension were good.
Aims:
-
Improve neck mobility
Improve forelimb reach and strength
Balance feet and improve flexibility
