Betty – Exercise Prescription and Notes
18/12/24
Subjective: Betty was seen following a saddle fitter evaluation which revealed some bracing
and tension over Bettys back. The saddle was too wide and is adjusted. Started in work this
year and riding well under saddle. BCS 5/9. Camped out pelvic posture and stands base
narrow, croup high currently. No obvious swellings, has recently pulled shoes and been
stuck in the fence
Gait: Walked out slow but quickly warmed into her rhythm. Base narrow in walk in front and
behind, slight external rotation left forelimb and right hindlimb. Right hindlimb has lateral
twist on ground contact worse in the surface. Pelvic drop mildly to the left, Bettys back is
held tense through transitions. Elevated head carriage or over flexes on occasion, head
tilted left especially on the right rein. Right rein circling is more difficult, rib bend and head
used as a counter balance. Good strides and tracks up frequently. Good rhythm and ground
clearance in trot, a little hesitant with the left hindlimbs and lower flight arc with the right.
Canter breaks frequently and dis-unites.
Turning is better to the right, left turn shows good flexibility, slightly uneven timing in
hindlimbs.
Main palpation findings: Increased tension shoulders and base of the neck. Hypotrophic
thoracic epaxials and reactive trigger points and spasming into lumbar region. Trapezius
spasming on caudal boarder bilaterally – good development over shoulders. Rib heads
reactive left side. Pelvis locked into extension. Straight hindlimbs and reduced biceps
femoris and gluteals.
Range of motion: Neck good, Forelimb protraction is minimally restricted bilaterally. Spinal
range of motion not attempted due to visual assessment on lunge and posture indicating
pelvis is fixed and reactive.
Do the following Exercises each day : stretches, back up and haynet changes
Exercises below, aim for 3x a week 30 minute sessions. Heat pad will be useful.
