Physiotherapy Report
Re: Walter Owen
Subjective: Walter has been doing well on his walks and with his hydrotherapy. Ms Owen noticed
the effects after facilitated hind-limb movement on the treadmill aided Walters’ gait patterns for
several days compared to locomotion without the input on his latest visit. Discussed using walks in
long grass and physiotherapist exercise prescription to build on the work done here. Recently lost
family dog and Walter can be an emotional dog – eating and drinking well. Weight has increased
slightly – no concerns.
Objective: Sit posture is still mildly splayed with kyphotic lumbar spine. Right hind-limb is weaker on
biceps femoris ~20%. There is some improvement in the tonicity of Walters hamstrings and
quadriceps which have been a factor in limiting his hind-limb range of motion. Limited hip extension
and hind-limb retraction bilaterally. Left lumbar spine showed mild restrictions and trigger points.
No crepitus or joint restrictions palpated.
Assessment: Overall Walter is improving well, his hind-limb strength and stamina is improving. We
now would like to address the splayed limb positions by encouraging a narrow base stance with the
hindlimbs and increasing the muscle on his medial thigh and lateral thigh. His back pain is settled
nicely, care to be taken in spinal extension. Work to be done on facilitating hind-limb retraction and
maintaining range of motion in the hindlimbs.
