Chance – Exercise Prescription
Chance is a 17-year-old horse presenting with tenderness over the left gluteal muscle. The
owner reports that he was sore when brushed or hovering near the muscle.
In walk Chance has a toe-in stance on the left forelimb while walking. Additionally, Chance
has shown signs of stiffness in the left hindlimb and has a lordotic posture, most likely due
to breed and conformation, he is also in light work and so not regularly asked for
engagement of his core, this may be factoring into some mild back pain. Tracking up is good
and pelvic motion looks symmetrical following physio.
Posture: Lordotic posture observed, suggesting potential discomfort or compensatory
mechanism.
ROM: Back shows restricted dorsi-flexion of the spine. Good pelvic movement and
rounding.
There was some mild tone increases down the hamstrings and this may be limiting hindlimb
motion especially in the left hindlimb. There is also a small growth on the left hindlimb (pea
size) – to monitor for any changes.
Goals:
Address lordotic posture and related back pain.
Improve overall strength and gait mechanics.
