Belle – Exercise Prescription and Notes

Subjective: Belle was seen following purchase by her loaner from a riding school
environment. History of a potentially poorly fitted saddle which slipped forwards. Foot
balance shows Belle will be due for a foot trim soon, some signs of breakage and long toes
were seen. BCS 6/9 could do with losing some weight going into winter. Posture was good,
pelvis is held in extension and narrow posture with hindlimbs.
Gait: Mostly straight moving all limbs. Right forelimb toe in. Tuber coxae drop is even, lacks
motion at times. Under-tracks slightly left hind. Stilted movement bilaterally in the
shoulders and hindlimbs. We would expect to see a longer stride pattern with all limbs.
Circling, neck bend looks good, better to the left. foot placement is good, foot flight is good,
timing is outside usual 4 beat rhythm. Back up could have lumbar lift improved
Main palpation findings: Increased tension shoulders and right side of the neck into the
shoulders and chest. Hypotrophic thoracic epaxials and reactive trigger points and spasming
into lumbar region - mild. Global tension and increased flight or fight tone throughout.
Hypertonic and hypertrophic hamstrings and lattissimus dorsi. Small swelling right forelimb
lateral fetlock – soft.
Range of motion: Neck braced and restricted, Forelimb protraction is restricted bilaterally
and tentitive, more so right side. Spinal range of motion attempted but lack of motion,
pelvic range attempted and pelvis in extension, will flex minimally
Do the following Exercises each day : stretches, back up and haynet changes
Exercises below, aim for 2x a week 30 minute sessions. Heat pad will be useful. Long
reining will be much better than lunging, example plan is at the end.
