Paddy – Exercise Prescription and Notes

Subjective: Paddy was booked in following referral from Saddler. Owner is concerned about
behaviour when standing/jumping next to Paddy and he is displaying signs he is in
discomfort. Saddle checked and is tipping back, is wide on the shoulders and restricting
clearanceof the withers and is moving when ridden. Good foot balance, front shoes..
Overweight BCS 2/9 (lean). Currently in light work – just moved farm, has turn out. Pelvis
very tucked and in flexion, dropped back in thoracic region. Base narrow hindlimbs and
forelimbs. No obvious swellings.
Gait: Settled into good walk rhythm after couple of runs, inconsistent walking pattern to
start with some toe first steps in the forelimbs. Mostly straight moving all limbs but narrow.
Initially mildly increased tuber coxae drop left hindlimb with increased metatarsophalangeal
drop left hind, indicating increased weight bearing left hindlimb and offloading right
hindlimb. Undertracks slightly right hind. No toe drag. Very elevated head carriage and
thoracic bracing. Lacking stifle and hock flexion Right hind.
On the lunge head and neck held high. Resistant left turns more than right. Unsure but very
willing. Good action over poles
Main palpation findings: Increased tension shoulders and subscapular slip. Braced neck
both ways and lots of release from hand pressure. Hypotrophic thoracic epaxials and
reactive trigger points and spasming into lumbar region. Gluteals hypotrophic (superficial)
and middle gluteal hypertrophic. Tight psoas muscle which is drawing hips into flexion.
Range of motion: Neck stilted. Spinal range of motion not attempted due to visual
assessment indicating pelvis is fixed and reactive.
Exercises below, aim for 3x a week 20 minute sessions. Heat pad and massage pad will be
useful. Long reining will be much better than lunging, example plan is at the end.
