Penny – Physiotherapy Report and Exercises
24/9/24
Penny was seen for her initial consult on the 24/9/24. Penny is riding well and currently does local
shows, flat work and polework with her owner. Shod on front feet. Saddle checked recently and
bit and vet up to date. Difficulty right bend and heavier on this side.
Posture: Penny has a neat head and well-set neck. Her shoulders are strong and well muscled with
good coverage over her back. She tends to stand with her pelvis in extension giving the appearance
of a flatter rump. Hindlimbs re quite straight.
Gait: External rotation of right hind, left hind straight flight pattern. Landing is good both hindlimbs,
a little narrow moving behind overall. Straight forelimbs. Undertracking 1 hoof length with the right
hindlimb. In trot, initially reluctant but will trot, a little heavier on the forelimbs in terms of weight
carrying. Undertracks in trot 1 hoof bilaterally.
Turning right looks stilted in the neck and back. Left turn was good. Good rhythm, foot flight and
placement left turn, right turn reduced foot flight and rhythm.
Palpation: Restricted mid cervical spine right hand side, released off slight pressure. Spasming and
tension around left trapezius and saddle tree points, left lumbar region, slightly spasming and
restricted, right side was moderately spasming and trigger points location in lumbar region. Reduced
gluteal mass (middle gluteal) indicating reduced or limited hip extension. Stronger right shoulder and
bracing right hand side of the body. Previous ulcer concern, still reactive right hand side.
Aims:
Soften and supple the neck through stretches
Work on quality canter transitions and transitions within gaits to increase gluteal use
Suppleness left and right sides evenly
