Lucy- Physiotherapy Notes
10/09/24
Lucy was seen following a diagnosis of a common calcaneal degeneration. She is showing
increased plantigrade stance in the right hindlimb and associated digit flexion suggesting the
SDFT is also under strain. She is able to locomote but is minimally weight bearing on the
affected limb. Sit posture shows lateral placement of the right hindlimb and disengagement
of this limb during rising. Left hindlimb placed medially.
Palpation
Bilateral trapezius reactivity due to increased cranial loading
Increased spinal reactivity and spasming especially on the left side
Decreased hamstring activation, bulk and tone on right hindlimb
Increased hamstring development and tone left hindlimb
Bilateral reduction in digit flexion in forelimbs with thickening
Several masses palpated right armpit, left hindlimb mid quadriceps being largest.
Aim: Improve balance and address compensations
Advice points
Weigh out food ration to prevent excessive weight. You may also wish to look at
lower calorie or “light” food to be cautious
Increase brain engagement by using toys or games to increase mental capacity,
kongs, likit mats or games with towels or bottles can be helpful
Revisit Veterinary advice on either splinting with hard splint or arthrodesis
