William
05/09/24
William was seen for physiotherapy to assess muscle health and maintenance. William is 21 and fit
and healthy. He is ridden but is having issues with his saddle. The saddle has just been replaced and
is a better fit for horse and rider. Farrier the day of visit, feet look good and balanced. Owner noted
slight squaring of hindlimbs prior to trimming.
Gait assessment –William travelled on two tracks, he travels straight, albeit slightly narrow with the
hindlimbs. Pelvic symmetry has vastly improved.
Turning showed good hindlimb proprioception, placement, and foot height. Timing was good. Neck
and back are good on the turns during gait assessment. Slightly better with right turns than left.
Palpation –Head and neck are symmetrical in muscle bulk, tension around cranial shoulders into
base of the neck. Restricted fascia over the neck and shoulders right hand side. Trapezius reactive
both sides (possibly from prev saddle). Chest and pecs are low and dropped, needs wither elevation
through engagement of thoracic sling muscles. Mild atrophy of longissimus muscle, improved since
last visit, more marked on the right hand side. Good back movement. Pelvis is restricted and often
tucked in flexion, able to extend well. Range of motion in hindlimbs restricted in
extension/retraction. Forelimbs mildly limited in protraction.
