Nelly – Exercise Prescription and Notes
29/08/24
Subjective: Nelly was seen following a fall in the horse trailer over the weekend. She
sustained a small laceration to the right hindlimb which is healing nicely, some swelling still
present. Good weight and condition, alert and bright in herself. Saddle slips right, low
withers, croup high and very wide spine, will be difficult to fit. Slightly sunken thoracic sling
posture and slight sway back. Previous diagnosis of OA in tarsocrural joint left hind.
Gait: Walk showed even pelvic excursion both sides and good rhythmical walk albeit slightly
slow. Reduced flexion in the right hindlimb, straight foot flight and landing. In trot dishing
action seen forelimbs and narrow movement behind, flexion is apparent. Circling shows
stiffness in the neck to the left, back mobility looks good, timing, foot placement and foot
flight good on the turns – mildly reluctant.
Main palpation findings: Increased tension shoulders over thoracic trapezius. Right side
brachiocephalicus muscle reactive and tight restriction left neck mobility. Reactive over
thoracic sling pectorals and serratus. Rib heads mobile and feel okay, small amounts of
swelling, no heat.
Range of motion: Neck good right, a little restricted left. Forelimb retraction limited. right
forelimb, protraction is minimally restricted bilaterally. Spinal range of motion could be
improved via stretches.
Do the following Exercises each day : stretches, back up and haynet changes
Exercises below, aim for 3/4x a week 30 minute sessions. Long reining will be much better
than lunging
