Physiotherapist report – Tyson Ollerenshaw
Date: 24^(th) June 2020 Physiotherapy Report
Subjective: Tyson has been weight-bearing on his left hindlimb less
frequently and this has worsened with the lockdown due to Covid-19.
Owner arranged a telephone consultation to aid with exercise adaption
and advice on what the possible options were.
It was reported for a couple of days Tyson had increased spasming and
contracture of the digits on the left hind-limb. This was resolved
through owner massage and has not been observed before.
There is additional stress placed on the right hindlimb and muscle
hypertonicity and hypertrophy are evident, this limb is placed slightly
medially and used for locomotion.
Tyson regularly gets additional spasming/trigger points in the lumbar
region of his paraspinal muscles and up through his long head of triceps
and the boarders along latissimus dorsi due to over exertion of the
forelimbs.
Post-castration Tyson was reported to use the affected limb for a short
period of time when on pain relief, it has been advised to ask for
additional support from the Veterinary Surgeon to assess his pain score
and whether it would benefit Tyson returning to some additional exercise
to increase strength in his limb.
Gait: From the videos Tyson is completely non-weight bearing on the
affected limb and it is subsequently held in flexion. There is
additional muscle atrophy of the limb. In standing and slow walk some
attempts to place the limb have been noted, weight is transferred
minimally through the leg.
Reviews have been done on the current exercises and the ability of the
owners to carry out additional exercises and apply some additional
measures.
To Do
- Seek Veterinary advice regarding pain relief
- Posture – encourage correct posture when laid down, sitting or
standing by placing legs in correct position. Can ask for stand, sit
lie in succession (3x a day)
- Use kinesiology tape supplied – See attached pictures and
instructions.
- Slow controlled walking – 5-10 mins a day – slower gait used to
encourage limb use
- Rocking exercise – front to back and side to side – 10-20x a day –
wide stance (can use step to help
- Massage or apply heat along the back over Tysons lower back – pay
attention to any spasms by holding thumb or finger into spasm and hold
for 20 seconds and slowly release.
- Massage along “arm pits” and up towards spine, this is the area Tyson
uses to push forward.
- Bicycling limbs – if laid down, cycle legs (fold up first, extend
forwards, move back as if running, fold back up – 5x day
- Use of hind-limb sling where required to help support and encourage
weight shifting – can use when slow walking, rocking, or when
sit/standing.

- Cut tape into strips rounding the ends
- Strip one – tear 2-3 cm off and place this end on Tysons back without
adding any stretch. Peel down the paper and apply a slight stretch
over his leg. Just before you pull the paper off, apply the end
without stretch. Strip two – apply in same way down the leg, strip
three- apply the same stopping just before toes (can cut strips for
toes if able), apply this strip with some medium-high stretch to pull
toes.
- Green strip- apply to left hind – Start on the ouside of Tysons
kneeand fix the end with no stretch, apply high stretch to the green
arrow on the inside of his knee to pull it inwards, apply the last 2cm
with no stretch.
