Ella- Physiotherapy Notes
05/08/24
Ella was seen for her initial assessment 05/08/24. She is a young and playful dog and is a
good weight/body score. In stance there is a tendancy to laterally curve the lumbar region
to the left and overloads the right forelimb shown by different digit extension between left
and right forelimbs, offloading left forelimb. Global under utilisation of muscle mass.
Shoulders show increased strain over lattissimus dorsi from increased cranial loading.
Left hindlimb shows bracing patterns over quadriceps and semitendinosus limiting limb
movement. This limb has higher tonicity than the right despite its lack of protraction and
retraction.
Right hindlimb shown hypertonicity of the gracilis muscle on the medial thigh and decreased
tonicity laterally. Right hindlimb protraction and retraction was guarded and end range was
not palpated. Right hindlimb restrictions are more severe than the left.
Functional tests: Sit posture improved with some work, able to sit square. Rising from the sit
required patience and treats, able to push into stand and engage hindlimbs. Lie to stand was
more unstable. Turning left was good, hindlimb under midline and rhythm good. Turning
right showed a lack of hindlimb engagement and unstable weight bearing on the turn, hip
drop and cranially rotated with increased weight bearing. Back range of motion in dorsiflexion is good.
Aim: Improve muscle tone, balance and support the joints. Take weight from the
shoulders and slowly increase onto hindlimbs
