Re: Alfie (Whippet)
02/7/24
Alfie was referred following a puncture wound and injury to his shoulder and back pain found when
he went to visit his local veterinarian.
Subjective: Alfie settled very well and was happy with light pressure. Eating and drinking are
considered normal. His walks are 1-2 hours on lead for the most part and some off-lead sniffing if
quiet. This is a very good length of walk, advised to watch for any toe dragging/scuffing, changes in
willingness or soreness the day after walking to then cut down the walk to that end time to prevent
fatigue of the injured leg. Weight is good.
Gait: No obvious limping or deviations observed, mild rotation of the left forelimb and reduced
weight bearing on this limb. Stride length is good. Turning left is slightly stilted compared to the
right. Sit position is good.
Palpation – Left shoulder spasming and swelling around biceps muscle with reduced muscle mass.
Puncture wound visible but healed over with healthy tissue. Left elbow flexion was restricted as was
left shoulder extension. Elicited spasming on the lateral shoulder. Left lumbar region of the back
very reactive spasming and painful.
Neck range of movement was good
Right forelimb range of motion and muscle tone was good
Hindlimb range of motion was good, mild limits in hip extension bilaterally.
Right gastrocnemius (calf) reactive and increased in tone
Lateral bend left was difficult as was back lift stretch.
