Ernie P – Physiotherapy Notes
10/04/24
Ernie was seen following a diagnosis of spinal arthritis. He has some kyphosis in
the thoracic region and weakened musculature around this site. Spinal range
of motion was limited in flexion and extension. Massage, stretching, laser
therapy and exercises were performed with application of k-tape to alleviate
symptoms
Exercises
1. Sit to stand- First, get ernie into a good sit posture, this means all 4 feet
are facing forwards with no legs splayed to the sides. Then lower your
treat hand infront and down to encourage him to stand slowly. As he
stands, his back feet should stay still, moving of these back feet indicates
a dis-engagement of the hindlimb muscles – 10 reps
2. Weaves – Make Ernie walk in small circles or figure 8 pattern slowly, to
engage his medial thigh muscles and pull his knees towards his midline.
– 5 reps
3. Cushion rocks – Have Ernies front feet on the raised wobble pad and
gently move your hand lightly back and forth to encourage hindlimb
engagement, his legs should not move position, if they do you may be
moving too fast or too much. – 2 mins
