Harley
26/03/24
Harley was seen for his initial appointment to help performance and aid
“stiffness”. Feet recently trimmed and shod. Previous laminitis risk –
controlled for 3 years. Fed forage rich diet, minimal hard feeds. Body
Scare Condition is good, no issues with excess weight.
Subjective: Needs more impulsion when ridden, worse at home – possibly
stale with work. Saddle checked and slips right minimally, balance =
slightly tipped back, bearing = tight on shoulders and gullet, clearance
= good on spine a little low on withers. Saddle pad altered to thin one
to allow more room. Bridle fit, good.
Gait: Right pelvic hip drop, left side braced. Tracks up in walk and
trot, mild hind-limb scuffing of surface in trot intermittently both
hind-limbs. Less flexion right hind-limb. Dropped back and behind
contact majority of the time, travels downhill making it hard to create
impulsion for the rider.
Improved with quick transitions and following canter which indicates
lumbar area is affected.
Holds head to the left and can fall in through shoulders on the corners.
Turn tight has good foot placement, height and rhythm, looks braced
lower neck.
Palpation – Lumbar restrictions bilaterally, more on left. Limb range of
motion is good in the forelimbs, a little restricted at present in
hind-limb retraction. Splenius muscle in neck reduced, trapezius reduced
bilaterally more thoracic portion due to saddle ? Spasming and trigger
points in epaxials.
